Up to speed

Two years and ten months at this desk job and I feel like I have forgotten how to think out of the box.

I know I mentioned in a few blog posts before how much I appreciate stability these days, but honestly, sometimes you gotta rock the boat to remember who you are and what you are capable of.

I'm taking another big jump! Next month, I'll be changing jobs and hopefully I will feel like I have found the career/work-life balance that I want. More updates when it happens.

For now, I will just share some photos to show what I've been doing these past few months.

A pretty wedding gift from Mansy!

Photo heavy post. More after the jump!

I've been remiss about updating this blog. So lazy!

This first half-year of being married still finds me busy and having not enough time to knit or sit down and read.

What's new?

I'm currently training to become a barre3 instructor. And I've settled into a nice little routine at work with my new tasks. I am consciously trying not to worry too much about most things.

What else?

Here's a lazy update c/o photos:

Weekend picnic

Last Saturday was the 9th birthday of my nephew, and we celebrated it with a picnic in UP Campus.

There was cake, egg salad sandwiches, hotdogs, soda, cookies, and a lot of other yummy junk food. It was just our small family plus a couple of my cousins and their two boys.

It was a nice afternoon for some family fun, but the cherry on top was when my nephew said it was the best birthday he's had yet. :)

Some photos from the picnic:

Windy weekend

As if the Metro Manila weather wasn't enough for me, a few of us went to Pililia last weekend to have some much needed R&R. Well, it wasn't all play; my sister's band with Marc and a few of us went to our friend's family's resthouse for an ocular visit-- it's going to be the venue for their first ever music video shoot.

A few photos from then:

Colder weather

It's not like we get weather here as cold as in countries with winter, but it's been colder the past few days.

It doesn't make getting up early any easier, but I like how I get to wear my knit top without thinking twice. Small joys. lol

In other news, I got too see a couple of friends last weekend who I haven't seen since they left the country to pursue their masters degrees. Jenny from Spain, Red from China.

Red brought back a wedding gift for Marc and I:

One of the traditional wedding gifts in China is a pair of chopsticks for the couple. The man uses the pair with the dragon print and the woman uses the one with the phoenix. Can't wait to start using these in our future flat!

Colder weather means extra lazy bones, so I haven't decided what to do next. I'm thinking of knitting another top, maybe of my own design. I just have to choose a yarn from the stash, get gauge, and swatch. And on the sewing front, my sewing machine isn't cooperating; my presser foot seems to have somehow gotten misaligned and no matter how many times I tinker with it, nothing seems to fix it. Is it time for a new machine? Hint, hint, Universe!

Contrary to my usual impulsive self, I won't be jumping into a big buy for the next couple of months. We've been monitoring our expenses lately, and I don't wanna splurge on a new machine just yet. Getting another secondhand machine isn't as appealing as it used to be: For my next purchase, I want to invest in a brand new one, complete with accessories and a warranty.

Here's to hoping things fall into place in the next couple of weeks! And here's to hoping I somehow get back into the groove of updating this with more relevant stuff.

New hair color!

On the 4th of January, I went to the salon and had my hair color changed:

I am only posting a dark photo that was taken against the light because my face still looked tired from all the holiday hullabaloo last weekend. But hey, the lighting shows the change!

Truthfully though, it's just a lighter shade of brown in normal lighting. Not a big change, but I feel like I'm really starting a new year whenever I do something like this :)

Bonne année !

Last weekend...

Here are some photos from last weekend. Because I said I'd try to post more, but am a little bit too lazy to write about what happened (is this cheating?):

1. Stood in line for the girls' CR at a gig. That was my view for ten whole minutes while the girl ahead of me was possibly taking a cat nap inside. She took that long.

2. New hair! I had my hair cut and dyed a lighter brown. It looks nice here, but that was 'cause the stylist blow-dried (blew-dry? lol) it. The day after, it started sticking out.

3., 4., 5. Our friends hosted a party at their compound. Fun night, woke up the next day with my first hangover for the year.

6. Family reunion with my in-laws! We played the White Elephant game, which my FIL hosted. Marc and I won about 6 gifts between us... It was a little bit embarrassing having to "steal" gifts from the relatives we weren't close to.

WIP update: I'm nearly done with the Gemini's body. Just a few more rounds of ribbing. All that is left after that is the sleeves :)

Back at Work

Back at work now after nearly 2 weeks of vacation, and there's lots to do. Guess what though, I've been on Twitter and FB for most of the day. Sssh, don't tell anyone.

I was unusually chatty on twitter earlier, until someone said something that killed my vibe. Boy, can someone seem so self - righteous and self-involved on social media.

I'm not one to make an admirable list of resolutions, but there are a few things that I wanna adjust or start doing this year.

First of all, I wanna save up more, and at the same time, go out more. Is that even possible? Going out means spending more, doesn't it? How do other people do it? This is something I wish would magically work out for me and Marc this year.

Another thing I have on my mind is being healthier. But I don't wanna go on a strict diet. We love to eat, so we gotta somehow find a way to not abuse our bodies too much. Maybe it's alright to eat junk and drink alcohol moderately as long as we continue exercising?

I also bought a bottle of apple cider vinegar so we can detox regularly. Ever since I got chikungunya last year, some of my joints have been feeling stiff. And that's not good for someone who likes knitting, writing, and playing guitar. Hopefully, the ACV habit will help.

My wrists are currently feeling sore these days, and I don't want things to get worse.

So. Today, at work. Not as many things to do as yesterday, but still busy. My desk likes pretending to be busy too.

l had leftover lechon paksiw for lunch and I don't think it agreed with me. Is it too early in the year to ask for an early out? lol

Happy New Year!

2013 feels like such a blur. And yet so many things happened!

It's a bit difficult to go into details right now. With my erratic entries, I feel like I will never be able to catch up and make this blog up-to-date. There's already too much I've missed.

Luckily, Google made it easier for me to sum up the year. Here's a short slideshow of random photos taken in 2013:

I stopped making major New Year's resolutions a few years ago. I find that it just adds unnecessary pressure in my life. So this year, I'm keeping it simple:

1. Update this site more. I feel like I missed a lot of things here, and it was mostly because I felt like what I wanted to write here wasn't so important. But now I realized that kind of mentality defeats the purpose of a personal blog. So now I resolve to update this space as much as possible, even with the "little things".

I went through an old journal from 2007-2008 yesterday and found that I used to write detailed entries about the simplest of days, and I wanna get back to doing that. It actually felt good reading about what the "normal" things I used to do were back in college.

2. Don't stress. Always take a step back and remember what matters most in life.

Those two are my main goals for this year. Simple and manageable, the way I want my life to be. haha

For smaller-scale goals though, Marc and I will try to save up more by eating out less and following the 52-week Money Challenge which we found going around FB:

Photo taken from this site

We will try this challenge, but will do it in reverse. We will start with the biggest amount and taper it down as the year progresses. Much easier and lighter, I think! That way, when the next holiday season comes around, it won't be so heavy :)

I'm still not quite back in the mindset of writing much here, so yeah, January's entries will most likely suck.

Happy New Year!!!

The reason for the radio silence

I haven't been knitting and blogging lately because...

Marc and I got married! :D :D :D

Not to say that I will stop knitting and blogging after this big step. It's just that we've been busy planning and moving and reordering our lives. Once we've settled down, my needles will be back in business.

A few photos from the civil ceremony:

Hello there

A photo of me, taken last night, to prove that I am still alive!
With longer hair!

So I haven't been updating this space here. Bad me. But all I've been doing in the past few posts is make excuses, so I'll just stop doing that. Let's just pretend there wasn't an almost-two-month-long pause.

What's happened between then and now?

On the knitting front, zilch. I have completed a total of ZERO projects, but I do have two WIPs on the needles. Updates on those projects in the coming days.

I bailed on two knit meet ups with Catyanna and Imana because of health reasons. The first one was due to my being ill, and the second one was cancelled because I had to take my brother to the hospital that day (dengue segued into measles! Jeez what luck, poor guy).

My fishnet cardi is languishing in my project bag, still just a yoke with no form. I've just begun another knitted top, the Cap Sleeve Lattice Top by The Purl Bee. This one is for a KAL with Ravelry friend Maia. :) With only 13 days left in October, I wonder if either of us can finish on time! haha

I guess one of the main reasons why I haven't been knitting much is because of my as yet unofficial "promotion". Yay! Promotion! It's not that they've made me manager of anything, but basically I have more tasks now to handle (and a bit of a raise, hurrah). It's not yet official, so no one really knows about it here in the office except for our HR consultant and my boss.

Marc and I have been busy bees lately, planning a lot things. I don't wanna say anything definite here just yet, but hopefully in a few weeks' time, I can finally take a breather and document it better right here.

I'm still struggling with making the most of my waking hours, but honestly, 8-9 hours of sleep at night can ironically make me so lethargic and without energy to do anything but commute to and fro the office. SAD. Other people have trouble sleeping, but here I am sleeping most of the time yet not having any zest for life lol. Di bale, November will mean a new life for me. :D

Anyway, here I'll wrap this already-long post with some a lot of photos from the past few weeks (I bought a new phone so I've been taking photos with it more than my digicam :p):

Hello, I've been away too long -- An update!

Some people believe that August is a "ghost month" and is an inauspicious month... But that has nothing to do with my non-journaling here. haha

It's so ironic that the less things I do, the more time I have to write here. And when I get swamped with tons of activities and things to think about, I don't have time to document them.

So let's reach a happy compromise here, why don't we? I still have tons on my things-to-do and things-to-think-about lists, but I will squeeze a little time to cram some photos here for documentation.

We all get a mandatory week off in August here in our company, and mine happened in the second week of August. That week was all about cats, kids and eating (not the cats and kids!):

(lots of photos ahead :p)

Stayed in last weekend (mostly)

Last Saturday, mom and I played Scrabble with my eldest nephew. We had asked him to take a break from being constantly on the computer or watching TV, and we really wanted him to try other things to amuse himself.

He's not really into reading books and all, and English isn't his first language. But he did really well during the game. We really encouraged him to think of words on his own, and he actually reached a good enough score!

I missed playing Scrabble. It's such a classic, and I think almost everyone at home enjoys it. I can never beat my mom at this game, though. She's awesome at it!

Also, how could I ever win so easily when... hey, check out my tiles during the second round:

Erm. HAHA. I opted to lose a turn just so I could swap some of those vowels for new tiles.

I think this is something we could do with the kids more often. :)

Marc shared an article with me about Boggle the other day. Apparently, they're gonna stop making the original version of the game, and how sad is that? I admit, our own Boggle set has gone missing in between moving houses so I haven't really played it in years. But Marc and I are on the lookout for one so we could maybe start our own collection of boardgames :)

This blog hasn't seen any progress with my current knitting WIP, but I really am working on my cardigan. It's just that I'm still struggling with the gauge (it's lace) and the number of stitches to cast on and distribute for the raglan. Ugh. I'm getting there though! :D

This weather...

...just makes me wanna sleep all day on the sofa.

I just had some green tea to wake me up. Been battling these heavy eyelids all morning. Luckily, it takes only a little caffeine to keep my mind awake.

Happy humpday! I hope everyone's having an OK week so far! To be honest though, I think we're all looking forward to the weekend. :-)

Off to the beach we went! Again!

Although last week may not have turned out the way we were expecting it to, a trip to the beach last weekend was just the thing for my cousin's visit to be as fun as we could make it for him.

He and his wife are expecting a child in a couple of months, so he decided to take one last vacation to the Philippines before they give birth (they live in SF, USA). At first, it seemed that his visit had wrong timing, given the fact that my older brother was undergoing observation for a possible diagnosis of TB :(. Add to the fact that I suddenly contracted chikungunya, it felt like he wouldn't have enjoyed much. But enjoy he did, thanks to my sister, her bf, and Marc.

From start to finish, there was an endless flow of San Miguel pale pilsen, which is a must for whenever this particular cousin visits. lol. Good thing my sister and I have awesome partners who can hold their own when hanging out with our cousin! Before Marc took me to the hospital, I did, in fact, join them for a couple of rounds at our neighborhood watering hole (Our cousin was visiting! It's only once in a blue moon haha). Other than that, I was alcohol-free til our beach trip.

Weeks before his arrival, my sister and I had already planned a beach trip for his last weekend here. I was very lucky to have gotten over my sickness right on the day of the trip itself! I mean, I was still having a lot of joint pain the day before we left; the endorphins from the trip excitement must have cured me 100%.

It was a fun, albeit short trip, that we took. Here are some photos from the trip:

My cousin and my sister.
We took an early bus to Zambales.

Got sick + new addition to the cat family

I got sick last week with chikungunya fever. It's one of the relatively worse sicknesses that a crafter can contract because, aside from the fever and the rashes, symptoms also include pain in the joints!

It all started last Saturday, July 20, and it kept me "down" 'til Thursday last week. I could hardly move without needing some time or assistance. I even had to miss work for four whole days. It was nice spending time resting at home and such, but spending time at home without being able to knit or crochet was torture. I tried doing some embroidery, since that doesn't require much movement of the wrists or finger joints, but the headaches and back pain kept me from finishing the simplest stitches.

I could bear the fever and the rashes, but the joint pain? Ugh.
(photos of my rashes below. Yuck haha)

Feeling fancy

The other day, our office had a little "lunch out" for dinner. We call it a lunch out because our company operates during French working hours, meaning our dinner is their lunch. :)

We ate at Galileo! The food was really good, and the staff were very accommodating. I think it was a bit pricey though, but since we were a large-ish group, I don't think our company had to spend too much.

Sorry for the bad photos, but I took them anyway, because it was a fun, laid back activity for us. We don't get to bond as a team on regular days.

Also, I'm posting these as a way to make me feel the TGIF spirit! I cannot wait til this workday ends and I can go home to my nephews and niece (who is coming over to visit, yay). And tomorrow, we get to see our cousin visiting from the States. :)

Imaginary wine. Happy weekend! :)

Starting a lace cardigan...

Well, whaddaya know, I think I'm actually getting somewhere with that lacy cardigan I want to make:

I'm basing the stitch pattern on the half herringbone fagot lace stitch. The modification may have an actual name, but I can't find it.

I was initially going to use the half herringbone fagot stitch, but found it too bulky for the yarn I was using:

Since I'm using really thick yarn (on size 10 1/2 needles!), I wanted the stitches to be as airy as possible.

To compare the original stitch pattern (lower) and the pattern I modified (upper):

The modified version is more open :) Hard to define the gauge though, so luckily, I'm knitting this top-down, and can adjust as I go along.

In unrelated news, it has been called to my attention just an hour ago that the actor who played Randall Floyd (Dazed and Confused) is not, in fact, the guy who played T.S. Quint (Mallrats)! They're twins! Jason and Jeremy London!

Whot! I did not know this!

They may not be as well-loved now as they were in the 90s, but I still think they are good actors. Also, their movies, those I mentioned above, are some of my favorites to watch.

I don't know why this is a big deal for me haha. Anyway, I just wanted to share it. Marc told me about it this morning and I almost went crazy in my quiet office cubicle.

It's Thursday! Somehow, today feels more like a humpday than Wednesday did. It's like the weekend is so near, yet so far.

What's up for this weekend? On Saturday morning, Marc and I both have to wake up really early. He has an extremely early TOEIC exam in Makati, while my sister and I have to pick our cousin up from the airport at 6am. He's visiting the Philippines for a week, so hopefully, there's gonna be a beach trip sometime in the next coupla weeks. :)

Our most demanding, alpha-cat has gone crazy for my nephews. She loves staying wherever they are, and follows them from room to room. She also loves grooming them too! Crazy, right??

Tryna be more appreciative

I feel like I've been getting way ahead of myself again lately. Luckily, I somehow manage to remind myself once in a while that there is no need to rush.

I was on leave from work yesterday, and since Marc had work, I didn't have anything major planned. I walked a lot around the village, running my errands, and took my youngest nephew with me for the last one. It was nice to watch him play in the village playground while I was busy waiting for my CTC inside the barangay hall.

Marc and I set a date last night to watch Pacific Rim, so we met at the mall which was practically halfway between us. The movie was so awesome, all the cheesy lines didn't suck so bad haha. Also, my knuckles were aching by the end of the movie, from clutching Marc's jacket so hard. So intense!

Random things

Because I am now a lazy blog poster... Photos!

"We just love our Denise Interchangeable needles..."
This cat loves staying with me when I knit on my bed.

Who's the star of this photo? The cat, the kids, or the dollar bedsheet? lol
These naughty boys look so angelic when it's bedtime. Hmmp!
